India has ‘lowest’ 374 Covid-19 deaths per million, report estimates more fatalities: Center

new Delhi: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the central government on Tuesday said that India has one of the “lowest” 374 Covid-19 deaths per million population, as compared to similarly affected countries, including the United States, Brazil, Russia are included. , and Mexico.

Union Minister of State for Health, Bharti Praveen Pawar, in a written reply, told the Rajya Sabha that some reports have estimated many times more deaths, news agency PTI reported. Of the more deaths, she referred to the fact that the estimated number of deaths was higher than the official number of COVID-19 reported by India.

Responding to a query on recent reports that India has witnessed the highest number of deaths during the Covid-19 pandemic and whether the official death toll does not match with the figures of the Civil Registration System, Pawar said these reports are mostly non-verbal. Rely on recognized methodologies, or the data sources used to obtain estimates are not reliable. He further noted that in most of these studies, results have been obtained using mathematical modeling techniques from a limited sample of small subpopulation subgroups, which are spread across the country.

“According to the data available with the World Health Organization (WHO), India has one of the lowest deaths per million (374 deaths per million population) compared to similarly affected countries such as the United States (2,920 deaths per million). population), Brazil (3,092 deaths per million population), Russia (2,506 deaths per million population) and Mexico (2,498 deaths per million population),” Pawar in his reply to a PTI report said.

The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare has issued detailed guidelines for reporting of deaths in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. On May 10, 2020, The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had issued ‘Guidance for proper recording of deaths related to COVID-19 in India’.

As per this guideline, all states and union territories report cases and deaths to the health ministry. The data is put on the public domain on a regular basis.

The minister said a large number of states have regularly tallied their death counts and reported outstanding deaths in a widely transparent manner.

She also said that it should be noted that there is a monetary incentive for reporting Covid-19 deaths in India as they are entitled to ex-gratia compensation.

India’s robust Citizen Registration System (CRS) and Sample Registration System (SRS) predate the COVID-19 pandemic and cover all states and union territories. The Minister said that the registration of deaths in the country is done by the officials appointed by the State Government under the Registration of Births and Deaths (RBD) Act, 1969.
