Meanwhile, during the virtual meeting, Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Misri told Wang Yi: “Our relationship contained both opportunities and challenges and even though some of the challenges of the past year overcame enormous opportunities in the relationship”.

“With continuous communication at all levels, both sides will be able to resolve the existing difficulties and take the relationship forward in a positive direction,” he said.

India and China’s bilateral relations took a severe hit as tensions along the LAC led to an ongoing standoff between Chinese and Indian troops in mid-May 2020, which lasted till winter.

The standoff escalated on June 15, 2020, after clashes between the Indian Army and PLA troops in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh resulted in casualties on both sides including the death of 20 Indian soldiers.

Last month, at the 23rd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC), the two countries reaffirmed that military and diplomatic officials from both sides should continue their discussions to resolve the remaining issues. needed. Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, India and China agreed on the need to find an early resolution of the remaining issues along the LAC in eastern Ladakh, in full compliance with bilateral agreements and protocols, so that peace and tranquility can be restored.

Further, both sides also agreed that they should continue to ensure a stable ground situation in the interim as well and avoid any untoward incident.

“It was agreed that both sides should hold the next (14th) round of Senior Commanders’ Meeting at the earliest to achieve the objective of complete disengagement from all friction points along the LAC in the Western Sector in accordance with the existing bilateral agreements. and protocol,” the Ministry of External Affairs had said.
