Olympic bronze medalist India clinched a bronze medal by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan 4-3 in a third-fourth-place play-off match at the Asian Champions Trophy men’s hockey tournament here on Wednesday. India, who were defending champions alongside Pakistan in the previous edition of the tournament in Muscat, will return with a consolation prize after losing 3-5 to Japan in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

India took the lead in the first minute through vice-captain Harmanpreet Singh before Sumit (45th), Varun Kumar (53rd) and Akashdeep Singh (57th) scored a goal each. Afraz (10th), Abdul Rana (33rd) and Ahmed Nadeem (57th) scored for Pakistan. It was India’s second win over Pakistan in the tournament after beating similar opponents 3–1 in the round-robin stages.

After coming in as the most favorite of the tournament and topping the round-robin stage with an unbeaten record, the Indians will be disappointed to come back with a bronze. South Korea will face Japan in the summit clash to be held late on Wednesday.
