Independence Day 2021: Medals awarded to 1,380 police personnel ahead of ceremony

New Delhi: A total of 1,380 police personnel have been awarded medals ahead of the 75th Independence Day celebrations, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The recipients have been awarded medals such as President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG), Police Medal for Gallantry (PMG), President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPMDS) and Police Medal for Meritorious Services (PMMS). Ministry said.

Out of the total awards, 628 personnel have received gallantry awards.

Here is the breakup of the awards

Most of these awardees are being given 1 PPMG each to the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). About 398 personnel have been decorated for their gallant action in the J&K region, 155 for their gallant action in LWE affected areas and 27 for their gallant action in the Northeast.

Of the awardees, 256 are from Jammu and Kashmir Police, 151 from CRPF, 20 from ITBP, and 67, 25 and 20 from Odisha, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh police. The rest are from other states/UTs and the Central Armed Police Forces, the ministry said.

Another 20 personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), which guards India’s border with China, have been awarded for their bravery in repulsing the Chinese offensive in eastern Ladakh along with the army. The ITBP said in a statement that three others have received PMG for anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh, taking the total number of awardees from the force to 23.

“This is the highest number of gallantry medals awarded to ITBP for the bravery of its jawans in border face-offs/ skirmishes/ border guarding duties. The awardees include personnel involved in action at Galwan Nala on June 15, 2020, as well as those involved in violent clashes in Finger 4 area and Hot Springs on May 18, 2020,” the ITBP statement read.
