“We are working hard on our team, we have great combinations. And for us, it is a good tour to start, because for the first time we are going to play without our seniors and we have a team for everyone. A great opportunity to create,” Harmanpreet said on Saturday.

The tour begins with the first T20I in Dambulla on 23 June. India will play three T20Is and as many ODIs during their stay.

Coach Ramesh Powar said the goal is to inculcate the habit of winning.

“We are looking at consistency, we are looking at (forming) the habit of winning. For that we all came together as captain, coach and vice-captain. We have already spoken to BCCI and VVS Laxman who is the head of cricket (at NCA) and some things are going on,” Powar said in a pre-departure virtual press conference.

Powar said the team is working on the fielding and fitness aspect and wants them to take it to the next level. “We are trying to work on our fielding and fitness and take our players to the next level. That is the immediate goal we are trying to achieve. Going forward, we want to win World Cup, but it’s important that you build a team that can compete in every situation and against every opponent. That is what we are working on,” he said.

“When you move into a transition period, you need to give opportunities to the young players to cement their place and for that, as support staff, we can help them through the NCA or through skill coaches. Let’s try to give support through every situation. This is the right time for the young players to take advantage of this opportunity and do well going forward.
