Earlier, Surya took only 19 balls to complete his 100 runs after completing his half-century in 26 balls. He ended the innings in style, hitting a six and a four off Chamika Karunaratne (1/52) in the final over.

Although 2022 was a mediocre year by Indian cricketing standards as the Men in Blue failed to win major silverware, the year also saw the emergence of a new middle-order pair in Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli. The pair came into their own with India’s No.3 and 4 batting positions in big-ticket tournaments like the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup 2022. While Kohli broke his century drought in the Asia Cup against Afghanistan, it was SKY who was at the other end. And now when Surya scored his century against Sri Lanka in Rajkot in just 45 balls, Kohli made sure he tweeted a congratulatory message.

Surya scored a sensational 112 not out off 51 balls for his third T20I century and powered India to 228 for five, making the task easy for their bowlers as India won the three-match series 2–1. Won it. He toyed with the Sri Lankan bowlers all over the ground, hitting fours and sixes for the maximum and in his trademark manner all over the ground to bring up his third century in the format.

‘It is important to put pressure on yourself’

After the match, when Harsha Bhogle asked about his brilliant performance, Surya said that a lot of hard work went into his innings.

“It’s really important to put pressure on yourself when you’re preparing for a game. If you do this in practice, it becomes a bit easier while playing the game. There is a lot of hard work involved but it is about getting quality practice sessions,” he said at the post-match presentation.

“You should know what your game is and prepare accordingly. The back boundaries are like 50-60 metres, so I was targeting them. There are some shots that are already decided but you have to take other shots as well so that if the bowler changes his plan, you get an answer. He (Dravid) just lets me enjoy myself. He only asks me to enjoy and express myself,” he said.
