Ind vs SL: Rohit Sharma beats Dhoni and Ganguly, achieves big in Mohali Test

new Delhi: Team India beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. This was Rohit Sharma’s first Test match as the full-time captain of the national team. India’s sympathetic victory in the first match of the Test series helped Rohit create history from the very beginning of his captaincy.

Rohit Sharma has become the second Indian captain to lead India to an innings victory in the first match as Test captain. Polly Umrigar was the only Indian captain to achieve this feat in Tests before Rohit.

Under the captaincy of Polly Umrigar, India defeated New Zealand by an innings and 27 runs in Mumbai in 1955–56.

Earlier this year in January, Virat Kohli was removed from the post of India’s Test captain after which Rohit Sharma was appointed as the new captain of the Indian Test team.

The first Test match between India and Sri Lanka in Mohali was the 100th Test of Virat Kohli’s career. Rohit along with fellow Indian players gave a guard of honor to Virat before taking the field on the second day of the India vs Sri Lanka first Test match.

Coming to the first Test of India-Sri Lanka, India defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs in the first match of the two-match Test series.

Batting first, India declared their first innings at 574 for 8 on the second day. In reply, Sri Lanka were all out for just 174 in their first innings as India forced them to play follow-on.

In the second innings as well, the Sri Lankan team looked completely clueless in the face of the deadly Indian bowling attack and could manage only 178 runs in 60 overs.

For India, Jadeja and Ashwin acted with the ball as the spin duo took 4 wickets. The second and final Test between the two teams will be played in Bengaluru from March 12, which will be a Day-Night Test.
