IND vs SA: ‘Discipline has been the biggest contributor to my performances away from home’ – KL Rahul

Flamboyant India batsman KL Rahul believes that it is discipline that has been the biggest contributor to him performing away from home. With a Boxing Day century at Centurion, Rahul has now broken 6 out of 7 Test centuries away from India. This talented opener scored 123 runs in the first innings and laid the foundation for a big win. India on Thursday became the only Asian team to beat South Africa in Centurion with a 113-run win.

Rahul said it was all about patience and determination as he wanted to give India a good start on the first day of the Centurion Test.

“Patience and determination – really wanted to get my team off to a good start. Opening partnerships are key on a challenging pitch. In a post-match presentation after winning the man of the match award for his scintillating century, Rahul said, “Really happy with my performance.”

The 29-year-old batted with a lot of determination in tough conditions on the first day. He was alert to be set in the middle in the first hour of the game and later faced the bowlers in the final session to complete his century.

Since his return to the Test team, Rahul has batted with a lot of discipline, leaving dangerous deliveries outside the off-stump. The Karnataka player said that he hasn’t changed his technique too much and it is just the mindset that has helped him score runs in tough conditions.

“Don’t think I’ve made too many technical changes. It’s all about my mindset, how calm and disciplined I am. Everything is going well now. The discipline I’ve shown has helped me perform away from home.” The biggest contribution has been. It is something I am proud of (his overseas hundreds).”

India’s vice-captain for the ongoing Test series heaped praise on Mohammed Shami, who played a key role in India’s victory with 8 wickets in the match.

“Keeped us little (Shami) in the park. Not only today but over the years the fast bowling unit has shown a lot of heart. I am happy with the way Shami bowled and the way other players also bowled. As Virat said, Shami gets the ball to go a little extra. Coming to SA is very special. This win gives us a lot of confidence. Wants to keep getting better personally and try to win another Test in a few days,” said Rahul.
