Keegan Pietersen produced a match-winning performance with double half-centuries to beat South Africa with a target of 212 runs on the fourth day of the third Test in Cape Town to beat top-order India by seven wickets. South Africa thus came back from their loss in the first match of the series at Centurion, winning the next two matches comprehensively and ending India’s dream of winning their first Test series in the country.

India needed early wickets on the fourth morning after South Africa’s batsmen scored 101 runs with a small target of 212 runs after Rishabh Pant’s century. However, Keegan Pietersen completed his half-century and was dismissed for 59 before the team could get back on track.

India eventually removed Pietersen, but by then the rising star had scored 82 runs and South Africa needed just 57 more to win. The middle-order pair of Rasi van der Dussen (41*) and Temba Bavuma (32*) ensured that India did not open the floodgates as they chased down the remaining target with ease.

Bavuma scored the winning run – in style – for a boundary followed by a loud roar.

India won the toss and elected to bat but were reduced to 223 runs despite Virat Kohli’s 79 runs. Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket haul gave them a slim 13-run lead, but they failed to set a big target.

India were bowled out for 198 in their second dig and it was largely thanks to Pant’s century that they managed to reach that point. And in their chase, South Africa lost Aiden Markram before captain Dean Elgar and Pietersen stabilized the innings and took the score past the 100-run mark.

Bumrah raised their hopes by dismissing Elgar for 30 at the stroke of the stumps, but the South African batsmen were up to the task.

Brief Scores: South Africa 210 and 212/3 (Keegan Pietersen 82, Rassie van der Dussen 41*; Shardul Thakur 1/21) beat India 223 and 198 by seven wickets
