India vs New Zealand: ‘Know the big score hasn’t come but I’m happy with the way it’s going’

Shami insisted that the workload is managed properly as he expects all the players to be in the right zone for the mega ICC event.

“I always prefer playing matches over practice. It is always better to play maximum number of games to prepare for a big event. The load is being managed and it is being managed properly.

“I just hope the key players are in a good zone (before the World Cup),” Shami said after his match-winning spell in the second ODI against New Zealand here on Saturday.

The 32-year-old led the bowling attack in the second ODI as New Zealand were bundled out for just 108 runs. He was an exceptional performer, claiming three wickets.

Mohammad Siraj also spoke on the ball. His senior partner Shami said that there was moisture in the wicket initially but the conditions were not conducive to direct bowling.

“It was a damp wicket but keeping good line and length was important. All the bowlers were disciplined and the result is there for all to see.

“The conditions were not as good as they seemed. He got out early but the conditions did not favor the bowlers. We bowled the testing length and got him out cheaply.”

On his role as the senior bowler in the team, he said, “As far as I am concerned, I always talk to the bowler. I know he is trying but sometimes you don’t get the desired results and it can improve if you talk to your bowling partner. That’s the role I like to play when I’m bowling.

My role hasn’t changed since I joined the team (laughs). Just have to keep working on fitness and diet,” Shami said.

With the series already in hand, Shami said the team may give chance to uncapped Rajat Patidar and Umran Malik in the third and final ODI on Tuesday in Indore.

“The management will take a call on it but they can be given a chance after winning the series,” he said.

The pacer suggested that the World Cup is far away and the team will try more players to find the right combination.

“Despite the results given by the Indian team in the last four to six years, if people still doubt the Indian team, then there is still a long way to go in the World Cup. We need to play a lot of games and try more players before that,” Shami said.
