Jasprit Bumrah Was announced on Thursday (June 30) as the Indian captain for the fifth and final rescheduled Test against England. Following the announcement, Bumrah became the 36th captain for India in the longer format and became the first fast bowler to lead the Indian team since 1987. Virat Kohli’s continuity as captain is being remembered after Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 and deputy KL Rahul was ruled out of the tour due to repeated back injuries. In the last 8 Test matches, India has now recorded 5 different captains.

Before Bumrah only one fast bowler had led the Indian team and that too 35 years ago Kapil Dev. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant will be the vice-captain for the team as announced by the BCCI.
Notably, the fast bowler had a huge impact in the bowling attack for India as he took 18 wickets in the last 4 Test matches he played against England. In his 29 Test matches, Jasprit has taken 123 wickets for his country with the best figures of 27/6. The exclusion of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul from the final Test is a huge blow to the Indian batting lineup. Sharma scored 368 runs in four Test matches played last year while KL Rahul scored a total of 315 runs for India. Rohit recovers from quarantine and Covid-19, KL Rahul, on the other hand, is working on his recovery from a back injury.
