IND vs BAN, 1st ODI: India Fined 80% of Match Fee for Slow Over-rate in One-wicket Loss to Bangladesh

crew India Bangladesh started their tour on a disappointing note as they suffered a 1-wicket defeat in the first match of the ODI series in Dhaka on Monday. Adding to their woes, international Cricket Council (ICC) heavily fined Rohit Sharma & Co. for maintaining a slow over-rate while defending the target of 187 runs.

The ICC on Monday said India have been fined 80 per cent of their match fee for going four overs short of the target to meet the time limit.

Match referee Ranjan Madugalle imposed the ban after finding that India had breached ‘Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel’. Players are fined 20 percent of their match fees for every over they fail to bowl in the allotted time.

India captain Rohit Sharma pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the proposed punishment, so there was no need for a formal hearing. The charges were laid by on-field umpires Michael Gough and Tanveer Ahmed, third umpire Sharfuddoulah Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Ghazi Sohail.

Despite having a line-up where batting resources were available till number nine, India had a dismal time with the bat on a slow pitch, being bowled out for 186 in 41.2 overs. KL Rahul, who batted at number five, played a brilliant knock of 73 off 70 balls as the rest of the batsmen collapsed around him.

India took a wicket on the very first ball of their defense of 186 and reduced Bangladesh from 128/4 to 136/9 in the space of 26 balls. But Mehidy Hasan Miraj scored an unbeaten 38 and shared an unbroken last-wicket partnership of 51 off 41 balls with Mustafizur Rahman scoring ten runs to give Bangladesh a heroic victory.
