Virat Kohli praised Shubman Gill’s Test century

Sitting in the dugout, Virat Kohli gave a standing ovation to Shubman Gill as he acknowledged his achievement in the fourth Test against Australia.

After failing to justify his selection for the Indore Test, young batsman Shubman Gill bounced back with a brilliant century. During the fourth match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia on Saturday, this young player scored only the second century of his Test career. It was also his first Test century on Indian soil, which came in Ahmedabad; The franchise he represents in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gill is now the second Indian batsman to score a century in this series. With this feat, he also became the fourth Indian to score centuries across all formats in a calendar year. Earlier this year, he scored a couple of ODI centuries including a double century and a T20 century against New Zealand.

On a hot day in Ahmedabad, Gill enjoyed batting on a flat deck, which the Australians had already taken advantage of. After the dismissal of skipper Rohit Sharma in the morning session, Gill joined hands with Cheteshwar Pujara and the duo put on 113 runs for the third wicket. The 23-year-old notched triple figures with a paddle sweep towards fine leg for a boundary.

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli, who was sitting in the dugout, gave a standing ovation to the youngster while acknowledging his achievement.

At the stroke of tea, Pujara, who was well settled for 41, was trapped in front by Todd Murphy. India scored 188 for two in their first innings at tea on the third day, trailing by 292 runs.

Barring Gill’s century, which was up for grabs, the second session was a bit uneven as only 59 runs were scored with the old ball which made strokeplay difficult.

The pitch still batted well and Gill hardly faced any difficulty in negotiating the Australian attack.
