IND vs AUS 2023: Glenn Maxwell Looks to Build Mental Application, Mitchell Marsh Unlikely to Bowl in India

Cricket Australia on Thursday announced a 16-man squad for the upcoming ODI series India Which will start from 17th March.

All-rounder Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh and fast bowler Jhye Richardson were included in Australia’s squad, having missed significant periods of time due to their respective injuries.

After being away from professional cricket for over three months, Maxwell is still battling with his ‘mental application’ as he looks to build up his intensity ahead of a crucial period.

Maxwell had a broken leg, while Marsh had an ankle injury, both of whom had to undergo surgical procedures to recover from the blow. Meanwhile, Richardson had to face a soft tissue problem.

Speaking after Australia’s squad announcement, Maxwell indicated he was still working on the mental side of things, having just played his first competitive cricket match in Victoria’s Marsh Sheffield Shield win over South Australia.

“I probably wasn’t mentally prepared to bat in that position during the Shield match,” Maxwell was quoted as saying in a report in cricket.com.au.

“You can go all out in the nets but to bring that mental energy back into the game is obviously a different thing. That’s probably what I’m working on in the next few matches to get a few more hits out there and increase the intensity of that match.”

Maxwell also said that after being away from cricket for such a long time, he would try to play as many matches as possible to find his rhythm ahead of the ICC ODIs. World Cup 2023 later this year.

The all-rounder said, “After not playing for three-and-a-half months, I made a conscious decision to ensure that I fill my calendar with cricket leading up to the World Cup at the end of the year.”

He continued, “We have a one-day series which is going to be a big series especially with the World Cup in India and it will be a good opportunity for us to try and work a few things out and get our plans ready.” Also IPL can happen directly after this.”

Marsh, who like his compatriots is returning to full fitness, indicated that he is not bowling at the moment, and may not see his arm swing in the upcoming tour. But, the 31-year-old said that he decided to undergo his surgery only to prolong his career.

“I haven’t started bowling yet, so we will improve on that in the next few weeks. I am confident in myself to play as a batsman, but I have always liked to play as an all-rounder, bowling gives me every chance.” Time permits to stay in the game and I will continue to be an all-rounder as long as I can.”

The first match of the ODI series will be played in Mumbai, followed by the second ODI in Visakhapatnam on March 19 and the final match in Chennai on March 22.
