Increase in C-section deliveries of positive patients at Mangaluru’s Government Hospital. Mangaluru News – Times of India

MANGALURU: The second wave has seen an increase in the number of Cesarean deliveries (C-sections) Government Lady Goshen Hospital Here. The hospital reported a 4% increase in C-section deliveries between April and July this year.
The hospital performs an average of 450-500 deliveries every month and the number crossed 600 in July. Last October, a record 800 deliveries were made.
Doctor Durga Prasad The MR, Medical Superintendent, said that out of the total deliveries, a hospital usually registers an average of 20% C-section deliveries. However, the average C-section delivery in this hospital is around 47%. “Since it is also a tertiary referral hospital, we get many serious cases not only from the district but also from other districts. We observed that the number of C-section cases increased to 51% between April and July, mainly due to Covid-19 patients going for C-sections.

However, now there is a declining trend with respect to the admission of Covid-19 patients,” he said.
Between April and July, a total of 141 patients tested positive for the SARS CoV-2 virus, and 52 of them had a normal delivery and 89 had to go for a C-section. The highest number of C-sections among Covid patients was recorded in May at 40, and in June 26 women tested positive who underwent C-sections. “It should be noted that only when there is an indication for caesarean, doctors choose it. This is an observation. The exact reason for the increase in the number of C-section deliveries in COVID-19 patients is yet to be studied. They are probably low on immunity. Interestingly, out of 141 deliveries, only two newborns tested positive, of which one case was reported in May and July. The newborns were asymptomatic, and were cared for on Covid beds NICU. Breastfeeding is permitted, and if all the parameters of the child are normal, and once the mother is declared fit for discharge, the newborn may also be discharged after informing the local ANM and the medical officer of the primary health centre. It is given,” said Dr Durgaprasad.
