‘Incompetence…’: Congress’ Scathing Attack At Centre Over Mehul Choksi Extradition

The Congress on Saturday attacked the government, saying fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi could not be brought back to India due to his “incompetence”. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet, “Mehulbhai seems to be living a charmed life.” He also posted a media report which claimed that Choksi had won the first round of the court battle to prove that a UK-based group, including a young woman, had conspired to take him to a Caribbean villa. The Indian intelligence service was part of the conspiracy. Kidnapped and extradited to his country.

“First Interpol gave him relief and now this,” Ramesh tweeted. Choksi, who is wanted in the Rs 13,000-crore scam in Punjab National Bank, has been removed from the Interpol database of red notices on the basis of his plea to the Lyon-headquartered agency. “There is no excuse other than inefficiency or collusion for not bringing them back till now,” the Congress leader said.
