In May, Uddhav Thackeray had asked Eknath Shinde if he wanted to become CM, claims Aaditya

Shiv Sena minister Aaditya Thackeray on Sunday claimed that a month ago, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had asked party leader Eknath Shinde if he wanted to become the chief minister, though he later brushed off the issue. Aaditya, who is the son of Shiv Sena President and Chief Minister Thackeray, made this disclosure while addressing party workers in Mumbai.

Senior Shiv Sena minister and prominent leader of Thane district Eknath Shinde had revolted against the party last week. Most of the Shiv Sena MLAs have supported him and all of them are currently camping in Guwahati. His move has pushed the Shiv Sena-led government to the brink of collapse. “On May 20, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had called Eknath Shinde to ‘Varsha’ (the CM’s official residence) and asked if he wanted to become the Chief Minister. However, then he had postponed the issue. But a month later, on June 20, what had to happen, happened,” said Aditya, referring to Shinde’s rebellion.

The Worli MLA said that he should have demanded the post with a straight face instead of running to Surat and Guwahati. Meanwhile, in his weekly column ‘Rokhthok’ published in Shiv Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ on Sunday, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said, Shinde had a good chance of becoming the chief minister of the state if he remained in Shiv Sena.

“Shinde would have been the chief minister had the BJP not gone back on its word of rotational chief ministership. It is surprising that Shinde wants to join the BJP.

The Shiv Sena and the BJP parted ways after the 2019 assembly election results after the Shiv Sena insisted that the two parties share the top post. The Shiv Sena later joined hands with the NCP and Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in November 2019. Uddhav Thackeray assumed the top post after NCP chief Sharad Pawar asked him to do so. Sanjay Raut has claimed that if BJP had accepted Shiv Sena’s proposal to share the CM post on rotation basis, Uddhav Thackeray had Shinde in mind as Shiv Sena’s choice for the post.
