Bathinda: Claiming that the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) would have “put streets on fire” had anyone mowed down farmers in Punjab, farmer unionist Joginder Singh Ugrahan took on Union minister of state for home Ajay Mishra Teni at Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday and assured the Uttar Pradesh farmers of support.
Ugrahan said: “We regret that we are 900 kilometres away.”
On October 3, 2021, a car from the motorcade of minster’s son Ashish Mishra had crushed four farmers and a journalist under its wheels during the agitation against three central agri-marketing laws.
Claiming that the farmers of UP had accepted this kind of treatment as their fate, Ugrahan said: “We came to end the fear that had confined them to homes, and we succeeded.”
He claimed that the 75-hour protest from August 18 to 20 for justice to the four bereaved farmer families had won the SKM many admirers in UP.
After the mowing-down incident, a mob had lynched two BJP workers and Mishra’s driver.
The special investigating team (SIT) named Ashish Mishra as one of the main accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri case.
The SKM, which had then prepared the farmers for a “national-level struggle”, now wants a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for all crops to all the farmers, the withdrawal of all the Delhi agitation cases registered against the farmers, and compensation to the families of the farmers who died during the yearlong struggle.
The Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) had held a separate protest at Bahadurgarh, while the other farmer unions had occupied the Singhu and Tikri borders of Delhi.
