Thiruvananthapuram: Findings of sero surveillance survey state health department has expressed concern as it has been found that only 40.2% children below the age of 17 years in the state have antibodies. This means that when the school reopens on November 1, about 60 per cent of the school going children will be at risk.
The report tabled before the assembly on Monday said that the seropositivity among children in the age group of 5-17 is 40.2%. Of the 1459 samples tested, aged 5-17, 586 were found with antibodies.
However, in the adult population, above 18 years, the seroprevalence is 82.6%. Antibodies have been found in 3,659 people out of 4,429 samples collected from all 14 districts. health minister Veena George Said that this is a good sign for the state. “This may be due to the high rate of vaccination that is happening and some cases may also be due to the natural process of acquiring immunity,” she said.
It is interesting to note that the state has the highest percentage of antibody presence among the coastal population. It accounts for 87.7% of the coastal population. Antibody was present in 1,294 samples out of 1,476 samples collected from this region.
In the urban slum population, 85.3% have antibodies. Of the 1,706 samples collected, 1,455 samples have antibodies.
In the tribal population above the age of 18, 78.2% have antibodies. Of the 1,521 samples collected from tribal populations, 1,189 contained antibodies.
The presence of antibodies in prenatal women aged 18 to 49 years is 65.4%. Of the 2,274 samples collected from this group, 1,487 have antibodies.
George said that this is the third sero survey conducted in the state in September. The idea was to detect the presence of antibodies among the population above 18 years of age in the state. This was also done to find out whether children aged 5-17 have antibodies.
