In fractured Punjab political space, Shiromani Akali Dal plans outreach programs to gain edge

Amid infighting between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) struggling to find a chief ministerial face, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has already announced candidates for 69 of the 117 assembly constituencies in the state. There are hardly a few months left for the elections.

On Monday, the party announced candidates for five more constituencies, including Ludhiana (South), indicating that it is ready for elections. The party was voted out of power in 2017 for alleged misgovernance and mishandling of cases of sacrilege. While the party still faces an image issue, the crisis in the Congress may provide an opportunity for it to come back.

This has already sealed the pre-poll pact with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the state, which is expected to negate the gains the Congress will get after the elevation of Charanjit Singh Channi as chief minister. In addition, the SAD-BSP alliance has decided that it will launch a mass contact program from Doaba, capitalizing on the ‘angry’ of Congress supporters over giving top posts (CM and Deputy CM) to Majha region by strategically choosing the region. for.

Zeroing in on Jalandhar as a zone, both sides will launch a massive outreach program with residents as part of the planned outreach strategy. Senior SAD leaders said former Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal would also be a part of the outreach programme.

As per the strategy of the alliance, they will meet people from different walks of life and their suggestions will be incorporated based on their area of expertise.

Leaders of both the parties have asked their city leaders and party workers to identify the venue for these outreach programmes.

These events will take place throughout October. As an ally of BSP, he did not want to miss the opportunity to organize a state level function on the death anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram. The leaders of both the parties have planned an event on October 9 near DAV University on Pathankot Road.

With senior Badal jumping into the campaign after a hiatus, the SAD-BSP alliance is looking to make the most of the current chaos in the ruling Congress.

Taking a jibe at the Congress in Punjab, Harsimrat Badal on Monday said the Congress has failed to fulfill all its promises of jobs and farm loan waiver and has now appointed a chief minister who has the freedom to do so. Not there. Choose your own officers and your own cabinet. A senior Akali Dal leader said, “This was the best time for the SAD-BSP alliance to reach out to the people and convey its pro-people, development agenda.”
