New Delhi: Amid the deteriorating situation in Eastern Europe, German Navy Chief VADM Kay-Achim Schönbach has made a remark for good relations with Russia to rein in China which goes against the current narrative coming from Europe.
Speaking at think tank IDSA in New Delhi, Schönbach said, “Does Russia really want a smaller and smaller strip of Ukraine’s soil to unify the country. No, that’s nonsense. Putin is probably pressing because He knows he can do it, and that divides opinion of the EU. What he really wants is respect.”
Putin wants a high level of respect and giving some respect to my god is low cost, even at no cost. If I were asked, it’s easy to give him the respect he really demands and probably deserves too. Russia is an old country, Russia is important.”
Last week the world witnessed hectic diplomacy when Russia and US foreign ministers met in Geneva to try to defuse the ongoing crisis in Eastern Europe. While the West is talking about the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has rejected it.
The German Navy chief described the partnership with Russia as integral to combating the growing Chinese hegemony in the Indo-Pacific region.
“We need Russia against China… Having this big country, even if it’s not a democracy, as a bilateral partner, gives them a chance. It’s easy and keeps Russia away from China because China needs Russia’s resources.”
Russia and China have a close partnership. Russian President Putin is visiting China in February to hold summit-level talks at the start of the controversial Beijing Winter Olympics, which have been diplomatically boycotted by many Western countries.
A western pushback appears to be pushing Moscow closer to Beijing, even as Chinese aggression in the region is increasing.
When asked about NATO’s westward expansion, Schönbach said, “As long as the sovereignty of the country decides to join NATO, and meets all the requirements to become a member … I would say yes”. But clearly stated, “Ukraine cannot offcourse meet the requirements because it is occupied by the Russian army, or by what they call the militia”, in the Donbass region.
Adding further, he said, “Take other countries like Georgia. Georgia is ready to be a member. Do they meet the requirements, yes, they do. Is it smart to have them as a member, no it isn’t.” ” But he insisted that Baltic states such as Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and countries such as Sweden and Finland could be formed according to “sovereign decisions”.
“Russia does not want NATO to reach its borders, countries like Ukraine to get involved. It wants “security guarantees” from the West and NATO that Ukraine does not join the security bloc. Several talks this month between Russia and Russia have been held by the US. Haven’t given results,” he said.
Schonbach expressed concern over China, especially when it comes to the debt-related problems it is creating especially in Africa. Citing Chinese attempts at technology theft, he cited examples of how a German company, Kuka Robotics, was taken over by a Chinese company and their “entire technology is gone” and “China is not paying back”. Recalling the attitude of German politicians about China after several such developments, he said that he believed “…China is not the good country we might have thought”.
The navy chief also talked about how the former German chancellor was “on China’s side” and the country is buying robotics, but “not realizing what this means for other countries. Paralleling that, I know very well that when Germany also gives technology to Pakistan, it goes through Pakistan one by one towards India.
The visit of the German Navy Chief to Delhi coincides with the visit of the German warship “Bayern” to make a port call in Mumbai. Bayern made a port call as part of its seven-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific region. The visit marks the final stop of the deployment of the frigate, which saw the presence of the German Navy in the region after a decade. The frigate has been on patrol and training missions in the Indo-Pacific since August last year and has made a port of call in various countries in the region.
