With 5.3 lakh doses given in the last 25 days – around 73,000 doses in the past week – Dakshina Kannada district is moving fast towards achieving 100% first dose vaccination coverage.
Of the total 1.8 million target population, more than 1.5 million or 84% have received the first dose and 6.3 lakh people have fully received the vaccine (both doses). At the current pace, district officials believe they will cover the entire population (100%) under the first dose within two or three weeks.
Dakshina Kannada District Reproductive Child Health (RCH) Officer Dr BV Rajesh said, “The mega vaccination campaign on September 17 and the fairs on Wednesday have helped in increasing the overall vaccination penetration.” “We gave 1.4 lakh doses of vaccines during the mega vaccination campaign and every Wednesday there is a vaccine fair. We have given about 30,000 doses in Wednesday’s fairs. We have already achieved 100% first dose coverage in two categories: people above 60 years of age, and frontline workers battling the pandemic. ”
He said that 97% of the beneficiaries in the age group of 45-59 have taken the first dose, and 55% of them have also received the second dose. “Similarly, in the healthcare workers category, 97% of them have received the first dose, and 69% of them have taken the second dose. The district has also administered the first dose to 70% of the target population in the 18-44 years group,” he said. He said the latter achievement is significant as the vaccination campaign was extended to the 18-44 category in the district in May itself.
