Guwahati: Assam Officials said on Saturday that the cabinet has approved the deck for the “Indigenous Faith and Culture Department” whose immediate priority will be in areas of the state frequented by illegal Muslim migrants.
The decision is in line with the BJP-led government’s repeated claim that the state’s demography and indigenous cultures need protection from onslaught of immigrants.

“Our tribal people have their own language and culture. They have their own beliefs. But there has been a lack of financial support so far from the incoming governments to protect their traditions,” he told reporters. “Since they do not have the resources or the ability to mobilize donations to celebrate and preserve their traditions, the government has decided to preserve and protect their traditions with the necessary support.”
The communities identified by the government for such schemes include: Bodo, Tea Tribe, Moran, Motok, Rabha and Mishings. “Our cabinet has requested the Finance Minister to allocate adequate budget for the new department as it is a good initiative,” the CM said.
In another major decision on administrative and financial reforms, Sarma said that the cabinet has decided that departmental committees can from now onwards approve schemes with an allocation of up to Rs 2 crore. He said that this would eliminate red tape and help the officials to take decisions on new projects faster.
The departmental committees will be headed by the Commissioner of the concerned department. For projects worth Rs 2-5 crore, a meeting of the Standing Finance Committee will be held every Friday under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary. Projects in the Rs 5-100 crore band will have to go through a special Standing Finance Committee headed by the Finance Minister. The Divisional Commissioner will be the Member Secretary. The meeting of this committee will be held every Thursday.
