On the call of Bharatiya Kisan Union, there was a mahapanchayat of farmers in Karnal grain market. Thousands of farmers came to participate in the Mahapanchayat. Farmers started arriving at night itself. By morning, a large number of farmers gathered. Around 10 o’clock, farmer leader Gurnam Singh reached Chadhuni to address the Mahapanchayat. Farmers came riding in tractors and buses with BKU flags in their hands. Farmers from all over the country are participating in this Mahapanchayat. At the same time, there is also an alert about the involvement of chaotic elements in the Mahapanchayat.
Why are farmers doing Mahapanchayat?
On August 28, the police had lathi-charged the farmers at Bastara toll plaza, in which many farmers were injured. It is alleged that Sushil Kajal, a farmer of Raipur Jatan village of Karnal, who was injured in the police lathi charge, died the next day. On August 30, BKU had made three demands from the Haryana government by holding a mahapanchayat at Gharaunda Anaj Mandi. But in the meeting held on 6 September, it was said to accept only one demand. The farmers did not agree and as a result the farmers held a mahapanchayat in Karnal on 7th September.
