In 5 Years, 267 Offenders Fled From Police Custody | Vadodara News – Times of India

Vadodara: The Gujarat police may be nabbing criminals diligently and putting them behind the bars but the offenders have been hoodwinking the cops easily to escape from their custody. In the last five years, 267 persons, who were in police custody, have managed to escape.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data reveals that there has been an increase in the number of offenders fleeing from the police custody. Interestingly, while dozens of cops have been booked and charged with negligence of duty, not a single one has been convicted in the last five years.
In 2017, 49 offenders escaped from the police custody — 42 fled when they were outside the lock-up while seven fled from the police station. Twenty-three cops were arrested and 20 of them were charged.
In 2018, 44 fled from the police custody — 36 from outside the lock-up and eight from the police station. Twenty cops were arrested and a chargesheet was filed against all of them but no one was convicted.
In 2019, 53 fled from the police custody — 46 escaped from outside the lock-up and seven from the police station. Thirty seven cops were arrested and all of them were charged but convictions were zero.
In 2020, the number of escapees shot up to 66, of whom 44 fled when they were outside the lock-up. Fourteen cops were arrested and charged.
In 2021, 55 persons escaped from the police custody and 48 of them fled when they were outside the lock-up. Twelve cops were arrested and 11 were chargedd but no cop was convicted.
According to police officials, many of the offenders flee when they are taken out of the jail for court hearings as the escort party sometimes shows lax attitude towards their security. In Vadodara, a high-profile criminal, Xie Jeng Pang alias Richard, a drug dealer, had fled from the police custody when he was brought to SSG Hospital for medical treatment in 2011.
He managed to escape from the country and reached Hong Kong where he was nabbed by the local police there. The Vadodara police then extradited him last year.
In May this year, Anil Gangwani alias Anthony, a sharpshooter, escaped from the Chhota Udepur police custody when they brought him to Vadodara. Anthony convinced the cops to take him to a hotel to meet his family and escaped from there.
“Some offenders also escape from the police station, mostly under the pretext of relieving themselves,” a policeman said.
