AHMEDABAD: A data tabled in the Lok Sabha indicated that Gujarat recorded 5.5% rise in estimated deaths due to cancer from 2018 to 2020. According to the data, the state recorded 36,325 deaths in 2018, 37,300 in 2019, and 38,306 in 2020. In absolute numbers, the 2020 data put Gujarat at the 9th spot across Indian states.
In terms of cancer cases, the data indicated an almost linear increase from 66,069 in 2018 to 67,841 in 2019, and 69,660 in 2020. In terms of prevalence, Gujarat was 10th among Indian states.
In another question asked in the house about breast cancer prevalence and mortality, the response was that it registered the same pattern as other cancers. Against 10,074 cases in 2018, 2020 saw 10,631 cases; against 3,748 deaths in 2018, a total of 3,955 deaths were recorded in 2020.
“Lifestyle, environment, various addictions, etc. have remained the primary causes for cancer. Timely screening and intervention can certainly reduce mortality in many cases,” said a city-based oncologist.
