IMD issues red alert for Mumbai; Heavy rain forecast in Punjab, Haryana

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday (July 8, 2022) said that parts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana and Karnataka are likely to receive heavy rains during the next 5 days. “Extensive/widespread rain and thunderstorm/lightning with isolated heavy falls very likely over Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat State, Kerala & Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana & Karnataka during next 5 days Is.” IMD said.

The Meteorological Department has also predicted heavy rains in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh during the next two days till July 10. The states are very likely to experience scattered/scattered rain activity with isolated thunderstorms/lightning today followed by widespread to widespread during widespread rainfall activity. The next two days, the Met Office said.

The IMD statement said, “Isolated/scattered rainfall activity with isolated thunderstorm/lightning over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh-Delhi on 08th and thereafter widespread over the region during 09-10th July 2022.” Rain activity is likely.”

IMD’s red alert warns of ‘extremely heavy’ rain in Mumbai

IMD on Friday issued a red alert in Mumbai from 1:00 PM today for the next 24 hours. IMD said, “Red alert in Mumbai from 1 pm today for next 24 hours. We request Mumbaikars to plan their travel and itinerary.” Many parts of Maharashtra have been receiving heavy rains for the last few days.

The Mumbai Regional Meteorological Center on Wednesday issued a heavy rain alert for Mumbai, Thane and other parts of Maharashtra for the next five days. It issued an orange alert for Mumbai and Thane till July 10.

Light rain likely in Delhi

The IMD said the national capital is likely to witness a generally cloudy sky with light rain on Friday and the maximum temperature is expected to remain at 40 degrees Celsius. Delhi’s primary weather station Safdarjung Observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 29.2 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal.

Yellow alert in parts of Kerala

With the onset of torrential monsoon over the country, the northern districts of Kerala state continue to receive heavy rains. A yellow alert has been issued for 12 districts except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts. As per the IMD report, Kerala is very likely to receive fairly widespread/ widespread rainfall along with scattered heavy to very heavy rain/thundershowers for the next five days.

The report said that wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is very likely over Kerala for the next five days. Heavy rains are lashing Kannur and Kasaragod districts and rivers in Kasaragod are in spate.

Red alert in some parts of Karnataka

Heavy rains continued in most parts of Karnataka on Friday as well. A red alert was issued for seven districts and people were facing the threat of landslides and floods. IMD has issued a red alert for Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagalur, Shivamogga, Kodagu, Hassan districts. The department has issued a yellow alert for these districts for three days from Saturday.
