IMD Alert: Heavy rain may occur in these states and union territories in the next few days, chances of snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir

New Delhi: While there seems to be no respite from heavy rains in many parts of India, the Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in many areas from tomorrow. Apart from this, many districts and dams of Kerala have been put on high alert.

Unprecedented and heavy rains have been lashing various parts of the country, with around 34 people having lost their lives in Uttarakhand and 41 in Kerala.

Now the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for other states as well. The IMD on Tuesday issued an orange alert indicating heavy rains for 11 districts of Kerala. Meteorologists have also put 12 districts of the state on orange alert on Thursday.

On October 20, the IMD had issued an orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts. In addition, orange alert was issued for all districts except Kannur and Kasaragod. on 21 October.

Red alert indicates heavy to very heavy rain of more than 20 cm in 24 hours, while orange alert indicates very heavy rain ranging from 6 cm to 20 cm. Yellow alert means heavy rain between 6 to 11 cms. The shutters of Cheruthoni Dam, part of the Idukki reservoir in Kerala, were opened on Tuesday to create more storage capacity in view of heavy rains expected in its catchment area in the next two days.

The Meteorological Department has predicted rain for South Interior Karnataka from October 20 to October 23. The Meteorological Department said isolated and very heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala, Mahe and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on October 20 and October 21.

The IMD said that a low pressure area has remained over Bihar and its neighbourhood. Moreover, due to strong south/southeast winds from Bay of Bengal, heavy rain activity is likely to continue over East and Northeast India till October 20. In West Bengal, the Meteorological Department said that heavy rains are likely to continue till then. On Thursday morning, a low pressure system that developed over the Ganges basin in the southern part of the state moved into Bihar, with parts of which received heavy rains during the day.

The weather also reported that sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh are also likely to receive heavy rainfall on October 20; in Bihar on 19 October; In Assam and Meghalaya on 19 October and 20 October.

The IMD in its forecast said that Uttarakhand is likely to witness dry weather for the next three days, thereafter, a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from October 22 and cause fairly widespread rain/ Can cause snowfall. , Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad on October 22, with isolated heavy rains on October 23.
