MMC chief officer Jayant Tari had assured the traditional fish vendors of Vasco that he would ban all illegal fish selling points, including wholesalers, in Vasco.
In a written order to the Vasco Police Inspector, the MMC has stated that, “It has been given to the notice of the undersigned that several persons are engaged in the storage and sale of fish in the MMC jurisdiction within 1 km of the existing Municipal Fish Market. ”
The order states that such activity is illegal under section 252 and sub-rule 2 of the Goa Daman and Diu Municipality Act, 1968. [ii] The bye-laws for the storage or sale of meat or fish, 1971.
“Traditional fish vendors have made a strong demand for a ban on this illegal sale. The provision under the Municipalities Act also says the same. We have instructed our assistant municipal inspectors to initiate action if they find such sale of fish despite our orders,” Tari told TOI.
There was a demand by traditional fish vendors when MMC officials asked them to shift to a temporary shed as a new market is proposed to be built. The sellers argued that if they did shift, many others would indulge in illegal sale of fish at several points.
