The growth and improvement of Tushar Deshpande, an uncapped pacer from Chennai Super Kings, was definitely one of the most talked about topics of IPL 2023. From starting the season as an impressive player to becoming a consistent name in Chennai’s bowling attack, Deshpande had come a long way to earn the confidence of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. After Chennai were crowned champions of the season, Deshpande talked about Dhoni’s contribution to their improvement. Talking to The Indian Express about his successful season, Deshpande admitted that whatever Dhoni asked him to do, he followed completely as the youngster had full faith in his senior. Deshpande said, ‘I know Dhoni can never take me on the wrong path.’

According to Tushar Deshpande, MS Dhoni was always there to boost his confidence when “things were going in his favor” at the start of the season. Deshpande was seen struggling with his line and length in the first few matches for Chennai. After a series of below-par performances, Deshpande lost his place in the playing XI, being replaced by another young Indian bowler, Rajvardhan Hangergekar. But Deshpande got his place back and eventually became an important component of the Chennai unit.

Speaking about the leadership qualities of MS Dhoni, Deshpande said, “He is a selfless person who keeps things straight. He keeps things simple and will be there for you through the tough times. I’ll do what he says, like a soldier.” Deshpande further revealed how Dhoni’s on-field advice helped him improve his game, saying, “He has a well-defined plan. You should take these steps, and then you should execute them.” In addition, he would provide freedom, and if necessary, he would speak up. He advised me to be restrained to do my best.”

Chennai Super Kings signed Tushar Deshpande ahead of 2022 IPL at a base price of Rs 20 lakhs. The 28-year-old player got to play only 3 matches last season. This year, MS Dhoni used Deshpande in different roles. The youngster bowled with the new ball, was used in the middle overs and also featured in the death overs. Even though he came out quite expensive on a few occasions, Deshpande was undoubtedly the best wicket-taking option for the Men in Yellow. He ended the season with 21 wickets in 16 matches.
