IITian arrested for stalking schoolgirls, sharing morphed photos

19 year old btech student Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), KharagpurDelhi Police has arrested students and teachers of a school in North Delhi’s Civil Lines for stalking, sending lewd messages and harassing them. The student alleged that the fake number was used to harass the girls. The police claimed that he used the online application to break into the WhatsApp group of students and circulated their morphed nude pictures on social media.

The police have identified the arrested person as 19-year-old Mahavir Kumar, a resident of Patna, Bihar. Police said a case has been registered against him under sections 345D of the IPC, for stalking, under sections of the POCSO Act and the IT Act.

The alleged act came to the notice of the school management when a USA-registered mobile number flashed in a WhatsApp group of class 11 students. It raised suspicions of an outsider entering the closed group without authorization from the group administrator.

Once removed, the number reappeared in other WhatsApp groups of class 12 students. Further investigation by the school revealed that 50 girl students and some teachers of the school had received threats and obscene messages from the same number.

The school management then took up the matter with the local police and on August 8, an FIR was lodged at the Civil Lines police station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said that the complaint alleges that the man is stalking girl students online, sending them lewd WhatsApp messages, calling school teachers from various international numbers, Entering online classes and joining WhatsApp groups without. Admin’s approval and is circulating several nude and semi-nude photos of students on social media.

“Interrogation of teachers, students and their parents during the initial investigation helped us to identify 33 WhatsApp virtual numbers, five Instagram profiles and various calls made using the fake caller ID app. Information related to the users of these social media IDs was sought from Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. After sharing of IP log details of these IDs used to create fake social media accounts, we finally identified the user as Mahaveer Kumar. His location was traced to Patna in Bihar,” the DCP said.

Kalsi said that after technical surveillance, our teams raided the identified address and arrested Kumar late on Wednesday night.

During interrogation, the arrested man told the police that he had used an online application to access virtual numbers on WhatsApp to contact the school girls and teachers.

“He confessed to using a voice-change app to contact the victims to hide his identity. She even used the app to create morphed nude pictures of students and uploaded them on fake Instagram profiles created in their names. Several obscene videos and photographs have also been recovered from his mobile phone.

The police said that there is no involvement of any kind of financial fraud or any kind of physical sexual harassment in the whole case.

The arrested student’s father runs a torch making unit and his mother is a housewife. Police said that he is currently doing BTech from IIT Kharagpur.
