Indian Institute technology (IIT) Madras is introducing new MA programs offered by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The institute claims that it is expanding the scope of the MA program by adding Economics to the already existing streams of Development Studies and English Studies and all three streams as two-year programs instead of the existing five-year integrated MA programmes. There will be 25 seats for Indian students under each stream. These programs will also be kept open to international students on an additional basis. The application process will start in March/April 2023 and classes will start in July 2023. Instead of HSEE, admission to the two-year MA programs will be done on the basis of an entrance test announced soon.
IIT Madras claims that it hopes to attract a more diverse group of candidates by making MA programs available after graduation from various streams.

Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras said, “The MA program has been restructured with an aim to reach out to more and more students who have studied in Humanities, Science, Commerce, Engineering etc. There is a great need for such humanities and social science exposure to the next generation of students to face and address the various challenges posed by the modern world. This expanded list of MA programs will open up new avenues of placement and employment as students will be trained as domain specific experts with international readiness and national focus.
The curriculum of the MA programs will be restructured to include more contemporary topics such as innovation, urban planning and development, health policy, environmental humanities, climate economics, among others. technology and policy, and computational linguistics, among others.
