The student protesters claimed that the mess fee has been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 per semester, which is the highest among all IITs in the country.

Indian Institute technology (IIT), Delhi students on Monday staged a sit-in on the campus against the hike in mess fees, following which the administration constituted a joint committee to resolve the issue.

The protesting students alleged that the mess fee has been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 per semester. He claimed that the mess fees in IIT Delhi is the highest among all IITs in the country.

“The IIT Delhi administration held a meeting with the students today to look into some of the mess fee concerns expressed by the students. In the meeting, it was decided to form a joint committee comprising representatives of concerned students and administration,” said a senior institute official.

“This joint committee will work on finding ways to reduce the mess charges. It will also do a comparative study of mess face in other big metro cities. It is important to note that the messes in various hostels in IIT Delhi are run by the students through their elected representatives who have transparent access to the mess accounts,” the official said.

The students staged a sit-in outside the administrative building by putting up posters to register their protest.
