IIT Bombay to Revise UG Curriculum

IIT-B Director Professor Subhasish Chowdhary said that apart from reducing the stress on the students, the changes are being effected to make the UG curriculum ‘more relevant and motivating’ for the students.

In a major announcement a week after the death of a Dalit student on its campus, IIT-Bombay said it is working on changes to the under-graduate curriculum starting from the 2022 batch, here on Saturday.

IIT-B Director Professor Subhasish Chowdhary said that apart from reducing the stress on the students, the changes are being effected to make the UG curriculum ‘more relevant and motivating’ for the students.

Chowdhary also sought participation and suggestions from students and faculty for the purpose as there was definitely more room for improvement, “to ensure that such an unfortunate incident never happens again”.

The director of IIT-B said this in a communication addressed to students and colleagues after FYB Tech. Darshan Solanki, an 18-year-old course student from Ahmedabad, ended his life on campus on February 12, triggering a nationwide uproar among top educational institutions.

Chowdhary said that IIT-Bombay along with the Mumbai Police have also started probing the circumstances/events/reasons behind Solanki’s tragedy.

IIT-B has appointed a senior professor and its former chief vigilance officer, members of the SC/ST student cell comprising faculty and students, some student mentor coordinators and the CMO in-charge of the campus hospital.

He said that the committee is actively meeting all those who may have useful information and has also appealed to others to reach out to the panel probing Solanki’s death case.

Mumbai Police has spoken to a large number of people, taken Solanki’s phone and laptop for forensic analysis, details of which are awaited, and a team also visited his family near Ahmedabad earlier this week Was.

Describing some media reports on Solanki’s death as ‘premature’, Choudhary said the matter is sub judice and hence he cannot comment on the cause (of death) till the Mumbai Police or internal inquiry report is ready.

The director of IIT-B reiterated the existing support mechanisms on campus that students can reach out to with any issues, including discrimination, and SC/ST status for both students and their parents as part of the new student orientation. Information about the cell of the students is also given. ,

“We are actively working to create an inclusive campus where all students feel at home. From the first day students enter IIT, during their formal orientation, we strongly caution against any discrimination . We also sensitize all students not to ask for proxy information like rank in the entrance test. We have a very strict policy on discrimination by faculty,” assures Chowdhary.
