IIT Bombay launches MA in Research for Humanities students, admission through GATE

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has launched a new postgraduate program, the Master of Arts by Research (MA Res), under its Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. The curriculum aims to develop candidates’ ‘research’ skills, while helping them learn to integrate diverse sources of information, read, think and write critically, and apply conceptual, analytical and methodological frameworks.

Starting from the academic session 2022-23, the curriculum will offer specializations in Anthropology, Linguistics, Literature and Performance and Sociology. The first semester of the program will consist of four general courses and candidates will have to select their specialization before the start of semester two.

The MA race will start with a capacity of 20 seats and will follow the existing reservation policy of the government. Admission to the program will be based on a multi-stage selection process which requires essential qualification in Paper XH (Humanities and Social Sciences). Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

eligibility criteria

To be eligible to apply for IIT Bombay’s MA Res PG course, a candidate must have passed a three- or four-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 60 percent marks or equivalent. However, there is a relaxation of 5 percent in the marks criteria for the candidates belonging to SC/ST and PWD categories.

Candidates should have valid GATE score/qualification in GATE-XH paper. Qualifying in other GATE papers may be considered if and only if the candidate has the required educational background for the programme.

Selection Process

Candidates who fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria including GATE-XH cut-off declared by the institute at a later stage will appear for MA by Research Entrance Test (MAAT-2022). Those who qualify for MAAT 2022 will then be called for the personal interview round. The final selection for MA Res will be based on the combination of MAAT-2022 score, interview performance and GATE score.
