IIM Ahmedabad plans to remove Sanskrit shlokas from new people, faculty opposes this move

IIndian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM A) There may soon be two new logos, one for an international audience and one for a domestic one, however, the move has drawn criticism, who claim that the decision has been taken without consulting faculty members. In this regard, 45 professors of the institution have signed a letter opposing this move on Wednesday.

The logo in question was adopted by IIM Ahmedabad in 1961 when the institute was established. The logo features a motif of the ‘Tree of Life’, inspired by an exquisitely carved stone lattice or grille of the Sidi Sayyid Mosque in Ahmedabad, which was built in 1573 AD. The logo also has a Sanskrit verse Vidya Vinyogadvikas which means development through the distribution or application of knowledge.

The new logo retains the impression of a mosque grill, however, it is less prominent. Whereas the Sanskrit shloka is only in the international people.

Stating that the news of the change of logo has come as a surprise to the faculty, the letter addressed to the Board of Directors (BOG) of the institute read, “The faculty members of IIM-A were informed at the Academic Council meeting on March it was done. 4 of the proposed change to the IIM-A logo. It seems that the IIM-A board has approved this change and two new logos have already been registered.”

The written letter further said, “The logo is our identity – the jali and Sanskrit poetry defines us and our Indian ethos. For us, it is a symbol of our Indianness, our association with “Vidya”, our association with the institution. “

Describing it as the commitment towards “Vikas” (development) of the country, industry, society, students and management discipline, the faculty claims that the current logo is their philosophy and mission statement. “Any change to this, either in artistic presentation or in verse, is an attack on our identity,” the faculty members wrote.

The faculty further added that the logo change will have far-reaching implications and long-term consequences on the brand of the institute and its stakeholders.
