IGNOU Professor Shambhu Nath Singh Appointed as VC of Assam’s Tezpur University

Prior to Tezpur University, Shambhu Nath Singh also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Patna University, Bihar. He was also the founding director of IGNOU’s School of Journalism and New Media Studies.

Assam-based Tezpur University has appointed Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) professor Shambhu Nath Singh as its new Vice-Chancellor. The appointment was made by President Draupadi Murmu who is also a visitor to the university. Professor Singh has assumed office on April 1 for a tenure of five years.

Singh, an IGNOU professor, has replaced Dhruba Kumar Bhattacharya who is serving as the acting vice-chancellor of Tezpur University. Singh received his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Jawaharlal Nehru University, based on the thesis “Sanchar-Kranti aur Vikas Desh” (Communication Revolution and the Developing Country), declared as the ‘Best Thesis’ of the year.

Prior to Tezpur University, Shambhu Nath Singh also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Patna University, Bihar. He was also the founding director of IGNOU’s School of Journalism and New Media Studies.

Singh has been visiting professor at Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi, International Media Institute (IMI), Gurgaon and Senior Professor at Jagran Institute of Management and Mass Communication, (JIMMC), Noida.

Apart from the above institutions, Singh is also the Visitor Nominee for Dr. Hari Singh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar Madhya Pradesh; Nominated Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad and Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth University, Varanasi and Lucknow University, Uttar Pradesh. He also served as the chairman of the drafting law committee for promotion as well as appointment in universities across Bihar.

Shambhu Nath Singh is also associated with several Central and State Universities in India as a member of the Board of Studies, Selection Committees, Finance Committee and Course Committee.

At the international level, Singh represented the country in the prestigious ‘International Leadership Visitors Program-US’ in 2007, which was sponsored by the United States Department of State. In 1997, he was awarded the ‘Harmony Award’ for his contribution in the field of journalism. While in 2002-2003 he was awarded the ‘Literary Award’ for his contribution to Hindi journalism.
