‘If you have the courage…’: AAP’s Raghav Chadha dares BJP to contest MCD Mayor election

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha on Saturday took a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the upcoming mayoral election of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to be held on January 6 next year. Addressing a press conference, Chadha highlighted the BJP’s announcement of not contesting the mayoral election if it loses the 2022 MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) elections.

Chadha said, “BJP had announced that it will not contest the upcoming MCD mayoral election. But news is coming that the saffron party is now fielding an independent candidate who will get the support of all BJP corporators.”

Bring your candidate if you have guts: AAP’s Raghav Chadha

Chadha asked the party to fight the elections on the front foot without any hesitation. He said, “If you (BJP) have the guts, then contest the election by bringing your own candidate. They (BJP) should come on the front foot and contest the mayoral election.” Commenting on the Center asking the Congress party to strictly follow COVID-19 safety guidelines during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Chadha said, “I think the rules have not been mandated by the government, so when is it mandatory?” will be done, only then it will be necessary to follow it.

Earlier on Thursday, the AAP leader had given suspension notice under Rule 267 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Rajya Sabha for discussion on rising Covid-19 cases in China and its impact on India.

Polling for 250 wards in the national capital was held on December 4 with a voter turnout of around 50 per cent and a total of 1,349 candidates were in the fray. However, the low voting turnout did not prove to be an indicator of pro-incumbency.

The high-decibel battle of the MCD witnessed claims and counter-claims by both the parties (BJP, AAP) on winning the election, however, it all boiled down to December 7 when the election results came out. AAP won 134 of the total 250 wards in the national capital’s municipal elections, uprooting the BJP’s 15-year rule. The BJP won 104 wards and the Congress was reduced to nine.
