Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan has requested tamim iqbal to reconsider his retirement decision and return to the team ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on 6 July. Najmul revealed that Tamim’s decision came as a surprise to him and the board as there was no prompting or indication from the player.

Tamim surprised Bangladesh cricket on Thursday by announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket. The ODI World Cup is just a few months away and it is a big blow for the fans and the cricket boards. The board members held an emergency meeting in Dhaka on Thursday night and requested Tamim to reconsider his decision.

Najmul revealed that he spoke to Tamim about the team ahead of the player’s press conference on Thursday and added that he had regular conversations with the veteran opener as well.

“The reason why we sat today is because suddenly we saw Tamim announce in the media that he has retired. It was totally unexpected for us because we used to have regular communication… and because he Earlier also he was the ODI captain, we talked to him about the team and today also I have talked to him,” Najmul told reporters on Thursday.

“I had no idea that such a decision could come. I have spoken to him personally about his future and he has said that he will play till the next Champions Trophy, later Jalal Bhai (BCB Cricket Operations) Talked about the World Cup captaincy with (the president) and I told him that he is the captain.”

Najmul also said that the player was not answering his calls after announcing his retirement and then he contacted Tamim’s brother Nafees Iqbal, who is the manager of the Bangladesh cricket team. He further revealed that the board is looking forward to resolving any issues with Tamim as his stepping down as captain during a World Cup year is not a good sign.
