Idukki: Kerala: Water level rises, blue alert issued for Idukki dam. Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

Idukki: Dam Safety Wing has issued a blue alert on Friday Idukki Dam when the water level reached 2,390.86 feet. If the water level reaches 2,396.86 feet, an orange alert will be declared followed by a red alert at 2,397.86 feet. The water level on Friday stood at 2,391 feet against the full reservoir level (FRL) of 2,403.50 feet.
KSEB Chief Engineer (Dam Safety and DRIP) Supriya S said that the alert was issued central water commission guidelines. “The current water level is 8 feet below the red alert level. The Central Water Commission allowed the Idukki reservoir to follow a ‘dynamic rule curve’ and at present there is no need to open the shutters of the reservoir. At present, we can raise the water level to 2,403, which is FRL,” she said.
“Due to power shortage in the central pool, it has been directed to increase power generation in the hydel dams. With the increase in power generation, the water level of major hydroelectric dams will decrease in the coming days.
Supriya said that after October 20, the rule curve will be changed and the blue alert will be withdrawn later. The next rule level will be higher than the current level.
The dam’s reservoir holding on Friday was 86.03% water, up from 2,392.52 feet on the same day last year. The power generation at Moolamattom power plant was 7.316 MU on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the average water level at other major hydroelectric dams reached nearly 90% per cent of total storage on Friday. The storage levels in the main hydroelectric dams on Friday were- Idukki (86%), Pamba (86), Sholayar (97), idmalayar (87), coil
(91), Mattupetty (90), Kuttiady (37), Thariyode (83), unyielding (76), Ponmudiq
(81), neriyamangalam (94), Peringalkuthu (43) and Lower Periyar (98).
