IDF soldiers shoot at Palestinian woman with knife attack in West Bank

The military said Wednesday morning that a Palestinian woman armed with a knife approached a soldier stationed in the southern West Bank before being shot.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that the woman was holding a knife in her hand as she approached a soldier near the Al Arub refugee camp south of Bethlehem.

The army said the soldiers retaliated with an apparent attempt to stab them with bullets.

According to Army Radio, the unidentified assailant was killed. There was no confirmation of the woman’s death from the military or the Palestinian authorities.

No Israelis were injured in the incident.

Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have risen sharply in recent months in the backdrop of several terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank that killed 19 people.

The Israeli military intensified its West Bank activities in an effort to crack down on escalating violence. The clashes followed the raids that have killed at least 30 Palestinians since mid-March.

Many were gunmen involved in the gunfight with Israeli soldiers or who participated in violent clashes. Others were clearly unrelated bystanders.
