Coimbatore: The 25-member team Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has landed to start sero survey in the district on Tuesday. The team will collect 40 samples each from 10 Covid-19 clusters, of which six will be from the corporation limits and the remaining four from rural areas. The team is expected to collect all 400 samples in a single day on Wednesday.
Officials of the Public Health Department said that the ICMR team had arrived late by a day, but they would visit the clusters and complete the sample collection on Wednesday itself. The team was to arrive on Monday evening and collect samples on Tuesday.
An epidemiologist, who did not wish to be named, said the 10 clusters identified include Muduthurai from Mettupalayam, Masagoundenpudur from Coimbatore North, Thimmanakuthu from Pollachi, a part of Sulur, Thudiyalur, Perur Chettipalayam, Vellalur and three other places. Limit.
While the 25-member team comprises of both technical and non-technical staff, the health department is likely to send some of its staff members along with them to assist.
Meanwhile, the sample collection for the sero surveillance initiated by the state government had started from Monday. While 180 samples were collected from six clusters in the municipal corporation limits on the same day, 180 samples were collected from the other six clusters on Tuesday, the second day.
As per the sero survey conducted in April, the sero positivity rate in the district was 20.47%. Officials said out of 1,260 samples tested, 258 were reactive. The sero survey conducted in October-November showed a slightly higher positivity rate of 21.94%. Then, out of the 1,170 samples tested, 248 were reactive.
“We observed a lower sero positivity rate in April as compared to November 2020. This was a statewide event,” a press statement from the Director of Public Health said. “This can be attributed to the antibodies stopping after a few months. When we do a sero survey after five months, it shows fewer people with antibodies. Vaccine coverage in April was also disappointingly low,” it said. A population gains herd immunity only when 60% of them become immunized.
