New Zealand captain Sophie Devine did not return to the field for New Zealand’s fielding innings after being forced to retire while batting in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cricket Cup league match against England on Sunday.

The 32-year-old Devine ran into trouble while trying to turn for the second run in the first ball of the 15th over at Eden Park and the veteran batsman knew something was wrong.

In Devine’s absence, vice-captain Amy Satterthwaite is leading the team.

Medical staff treated Devine on the side of the pitch before the White Ferns captain walked off the field to applause from the crowd.

Devine looked to be in good shape for the Kiwis as he scored an unbeaten 37 off just 42 balls as New Zealand looked to post a big total in their win against England.

After being forced out of an injury, the White Ferns captain was treated for an injury and recovered enough to return to the crease when New Zealand dropped Lee Tahuhu for a duck in the 38th over at 155/6 Gave.

But Devine failed to last much longer as he dismissed Charlie Dean in the deep for 41 as New Zealand stumbled late in his innings.

The White Ferns later tweeted, “Update: The White Ferns captain, Sophie Devine, will not return to the field for the second innings. Vice Captain Amy Satterthwaite will lead the team in her absence.”

New Zealand’s team was all out for 203 runs in 48.5 overs.
