ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022: India thrash Ireland by 174 runs to enter Super League quarter-finals

A Covid-hit Indian Under-19 team registered their second straight win in the ongoing ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup on the back of outstanding batting performances against Ireland. The four-time champions posted 307 for five in their 50 overs to post a mammoth 174-run victory, which puts them at the top of Group B.

Ireland’s team got out for 133 runs in 39 overs.

India chased down a 45-run victory over South Africa with a comprehensive win against Ireland at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday. Several members of his squad, including captain Yash Dhul and vice-captain SK Rashid, tested positive for Covid-19 and thus missed out on the competition.

Opener Harnoor Singh set the tone for his team as he returned to his best form with just one run in their win over South Africa on Saturday. This time he scored 88, before Matthew Humphries carried him lbw. However, by that time India were already closing in on 200, aided by Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s 79.

He then set a challenging target of 308 for Tim Tector’s team, who started the tournament with a 39 over Uganda to hunt down.

The Powerplay proved difficult for Ireland to gain a foothold in the match and keep up with the required run rate.

And when spinner Rajvardhan Hangargekar bowled only the third over to send Jack Dixon back to the dressing room, he was bummed.

Any hope of a fightback was finally dashed when Joshua Cox’s thick edge was caught in wicketkeeper Dinesh Bana’s second attempt as he returned to the pavilion for 28 runs.

Ireland were eventually bowled out for 133, with Anishwar Gautam perhaps the Men in Blue attack with figures of two for 11 at an economy of 2.75.

India will next take on Uganda, where a win will take them to the top of Group B, while Ireland will face South Africa.
