ICC Rankings: India drop to third place as Australia become top-ranked Test team

Australia are back at the top of the ICC Test team rankings, thanks to an impressive Ashes performance that led them to a recent 4-0 win against England. On the other hand, India, who started their South Africa tour at the summit, have slipped two places to third place and lost 1-2 to lead 1-0.

Pat Cummins-led Australia retained the Ashes by winning the first three Tests, before England managed to stay on a draw in the fourth match. However, the hosts finished the fifth Test in Hobart within three days, after which they rose to the top of the rankings.

India won the Centurion Test – their first win in the format at the venue. However, a thriving South Africa made an impressive comeback in Johannesburg before securing a memorable win in Cape Town.

Dean Elgar’s South Africa have moved up one place and are now fifth in the latest ICC Test rankings for teams. New Zealand, after drawing the two-match series 1-1 against Bangladesh at home, have managed to retain their second spot.

Pakistan has dropped a place to the sixth position while Sri Lanka, West Indies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland remain stagnant.

The tour of South Africa was Virat Kohli’s last assignment as India Test captain as he stepped down after the series loss. Last year, Kohli announced his decision to step down as India T20I captain and in December, he was replaced as ODI captain as well.

Rohit Sharma has been made the new captain of India.

The Indian Test team will next be at home when they host Sri Lanka for a two-match series in February-March.
