ICC confirms T20 World Cup will be held in UAE, Oman

This year’s T20 World Cup, which has been moved from India to the UAE and Oman due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be played from October 17 to November 14. Cricket Council (ICC) announced this on Tuesday.

The ICC statement came a day after the BCCI informed the governing body that the event could be moved out of India.

“BCCI will continue to be the host of the event, which will now be held at Dubai International Stadium, Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Sharjah Stadium and Oman Cricket Academy Ground from 17 October to 14 November 2021.” ICC said.

The first round of the tournament, consisting of eight qualifying teams, will now be split between Oman and the UAE.

Four of these teams will then advance to the Super 12 round where they will qualify for eight automatic qualifiers.

The upcoming edition will be the first Men’s T20 World Cup to be played since 2016, when West Indies defeated England in the final in India.

The eight teams competing in the preliminary stage are Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman and Papua New Guinea, before the play-off stage and the final on 14 November.

“Our priority is to deliver the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 completely and safely in the current window,” said ICC Executive CEO Geoff Allardyce.

“… the decision gives us the certainty we need to stage the event in a country that is a proven international host of multi-team events in a bio-secure environment.

“We will work closely with the BCCI, Emirates Cricket Board and Oman Cricket to ensure that fans can enjoy the great celebration of cricket.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said: “We would have been happy to host it in India, but given the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 situation and the importance of the World Championships, BCCI is now hosting the tournament in the UAE and Oman.” will continue to do so.”
