I worked with a mental conditioning coach for four to six months, reveals R Ashwin

Team India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said that he has been working on his mental health for four to six months under professional guidance. Ashwin has played an integral role in Team India’s success as he recently won the eighth Man of the Series award of his career in the New Zealand series at home.

In an interview in Cricket Monthly, the 35-year-old was recently asked about his calmness in the game and whether the weather had any relation to the pandemic. The Indian spinner said that he started working on his psychological challenges long back.

“It started well before that. I worked with a mental conditioning coach for four to six months. He helped me mentally, he was my bouncing board, he was a mirror for a while. Whenever you talk to someone when you’re going through a turbulent time, most people will tell you how to be better, how the fault can be on your side, rather than how someone else did something wrong. ” Ashwin said.

He further said that one should never discourage or point out one’s mistake when one is seeking help.

“Now both of these approaches are wrong. This is what I feel. When someone comes to you for help, don’t tell them they are wrong, don’t tell them the other person is wrong. You just need to be a sounding board. And he needs to be taken in a different direction. That’s exactly what he did. The first conversation I had with him, I said, “Boss, if you’re also going to say it’s my fault, I don’t want to do that. Because I’ve heard it all my life and I don’t have time for “Okay, okay, don’t worry, I’ll send you a questionnaire, just fill it out.” So he took it in a different direction. And yes, it worked. If I’m fired and if there’s an actual dialogue about it, that’s a question of judgment. But when the dialogue isn’t happening, in my mind I can’t make peace with it. Not everyone needs it, but I do.” Ashwin continued.
