‘I was worried about marriage’: Why did Malala Yousafzai marry Asar Malik?

New Delhi: Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai married Asar Malik, who works for the Pakistan Cricket Board, in a small nuptial ceremony at their home in Birmingham last week.

To share the news of her marriage, Pakistani activist Yousafzai wrote on Twitter:Today is a precious day in my life. Asar and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We had a small nikah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families. Please send us your prayer. We are excited to follow along on the journey ahead.”

Earlier in 2015, Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Pakistani Taliban for her fearless campaign for girls’ education.

After her wedding, some on social media pointed to her interview with British Vogue about her views on marriage. The views are conflicting as he said in the interview, “I still don’t understand why people have to get married. If you want one person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why not just be a partnership?”

She further said that she had concerns about marriage because of this history of patriarchy and child marriage.
