Ajinkya Rahane returns to the white team after a gap of over 15 months in place of Shreyas Iyer, who is currently nursing a back injury.

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has backed Ajinkya Rahane’s selection for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia. Returns to the Whites after a gap of over 15 months, replacing Shreyas Iyer, who is currently nursing a back injury.

His selection comes at a time when he has been roaring in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with fans criticizing the BCCI for making Rahane’s IPL performances a criteria for taking him back to the Test team.

In his latest YouTube video, Harbhajan said that the BCCI has picked an experienced and technically sound batsman as Iyer’s replacement.

He has captained India in many matches and he is also a great player. He has got the best technique. I think this decision has been taken keeping in mind his current form and has been called back because Shreyas Iyer is still not a part of the team.

“And with Iyer absent, it serves as an opportunity for Rahane and it is a big match. He is also a big player and I expect him to deliver big performances to justify the selection. I support this choice 100 percent and I think it is a good decision. There was really no other way than this,” he said.

An inconsistent run has ruled Rahane out of India’s Test set-up after the 2021 tour of South Africa. He was not the only big ticket player who was dropped from the team. Veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara was also left out when the BCCI made the squad for the Sri Lanka Test at home. Though he managed to make a swift comeback after an illustrious county stint, Rahane was still out of favour.

The former vice-captain returned to the Indian dressing room after a successful Ranji Trophy season for Mumbai. Leading the 41-time champion side, Rahane scored over 600 runs in the season including two daddy hundreds against Hyderabad and Assam.

So far in IPL 2023, Rahane has scored 209 runs in just five innings for CSK at an impressive strike rate of 199.05.
