I-League: Marcus Joseph stars as Mohammed SC beat Indian Arrows to retain top spot

Mohammedan SC registered four out of four wins with a thumping 4-0 win over Indian Arrows FC in the 2021-22 Hero I-League at the Naihati Stadium here on Saturday.

The Mohammedans were the only team in the league to have a perfect record of coming into the game this season and that record still holds. Three wins in three matches set them up perfectly for the match against the Indian Arrows, who had achieved a narrow 1–0 victory against Sudeva Delhi in their last game.

The Indian Arrows got off to an impressive start with some quick passes and possession in the middle of the park, and were able to keep Mohammedan SC at bay in the opening exchanges. Mohammedan’s Andjelo Rudovic was booked by the referee in the fifteenth minute of the game as he faced Parth Gogoi after missing an easy chance a minute earlier.

Mohammedan took the lead in the eighteenth minute against the run-of-play. Marcus Joseph broke the deadlock as he fired it from close range with his left foot, leaving Arrow’s goalkeeper Syed Zahid no chance.

Rudovic had a chance to double the lead in the twenty-eight minute as his effort went just past the post. Indian Arrows, with all their hard work, were not able to make anything in the last third.

Marcus Joseph got another chance in the 30th minute and made no mistake in scoring this season and taking his goal count to seven. Indian Arrows were disappointed with the way they had secured two clean sheets before this game.

The second half began again with Mohammed trying to put the opposition under pressure from the get-go. He got his chance in the 51st minute when Andjelo Rudovic, who was part of all the action in the first half, bowled a good delivery in the box. It was driven into the back of the net by Ashir Akhtar to make it 3–0 in favor of the Black and White Brigade.

Indian Arrows replaced Taisson Singh and brought on Velanco Alison Rodrigues to turn things around in the 62nd minute. However, Mohammedan continued his fine form as Andjelo Rudovic scored in the 72nd minute to make it 4-0.

Even with a huge deficit, Indian Arrows kept trying and made a double change in the 83rd minute as Suhail Bhat and Liwan Castanha were replaced by Satendra Yadav and Pritam Meetei.

Despite all their efforts, Indian Arrows were not able to make their mark on the game as it ended with four zeros in favor of Mohammedan SC. This was the second clean sheet of the season for the Black and White Brigade. Marcus Joseph made a brace and is now the top scorer in the league with seven goals.
